The History of Gibson Ridge  By Mark Gibson

In the beginning:

Many hours were spent in a bone chilling garage with my father building small projects for friends and to be used for gifts. As soon as my dad felt I was responsible enough, he allowed me to start cutting parts with the radial arm saw and then gradually he taught me how to use the other various tools.

As time went on Dad and I would search for the best deals on lumber. We used everything from factory scrap to businesses closeouts. Eventually with the projects we made from this lumber we began attending craft shows to try and sell some of our crafts and we even took some orders.

When I moved out on my own I still had the fever to work with wood. I was always building something, a garage, the baby's cradle, kitchen cabinets, etc.... The cost of hard wood is what drove me to find a way for a cheaper way to find wood working materials.

One day while reading "mother earth news" there it was! An add for a Woodmizer personal sawmill. I immediately started researching ... this mill, that mill, any mill I could find info on. I decided to go to a open house in Indianapolis at the Woodmizer world head quarters.

I took my son (who played in sawdust rather than sand) on the 3 hr trip to Indianapolis. Oh-boy I fell in love with all of there equipment. Now I had to convince e the wife that this was the thing to do. It wasn't all that bad when I explained all the things it would help to do all the projects she was interested in.

We chose to purchase the smallest portable model to keep cost down, but we would still be able to do work for other people on the side to help pay for the machine. Things started slow, but the word spread.

After 3 years of operating a manual machine and cutting 800 to 1,000 bd feet every weekend I decided it was time to upgrade so I made the trip back to Indy. Now I have a LT40 hydraulic. And the folks at Woodmizer were not kidding when they said you don't know what you were missing. The LT40 is a monster of a machine and makes even the biggest jobs look like childs play.
